What is a VAC ban in CS2?

VAC stands for Valve Anti-Cheat. It is the automated system Valve uses to detect cheat software running alongside its games. A VAC ban is the most concrete piece of public information you can get about a Steam account.

What a VAC ban actually does

A VAC ban is permanent and applies to the account, not to a single game session. Once an account is VAC banned for a game, it can no longer connect to VAC-secured servers for that game. In practice that means the account is finished for competitive play in that title.

The ban is tied to the Steam account. It is public: anyone can see that an account has one, how many it has, and roughly how long ago the most recent one was issued. That is what makes it useful when you are checking someone.

VAC ban vs. game ban

A VAC ban comes from Valve's automated detection. A game ban is issued by the game's developer through Valve's system, usually for behaviour that is not straightforward cheat detection — for example after a manual review or for other violations of the game's rules.

Both appear publicly on the profile, and both are permanent. When you check a profile here you see each type separately, along with how many there are.

Ban waves and delays

Valve does not always ban immediately on detection. Bans are often issued in waves, sometimes long after the cheat was used. The reason is practical: banning instantly tells cheat developers exactly which version got caught, so delaying makes their detection harder to reverse-engineer.

The consequence for you is that a suspicious player you met today may show up as banned weeks or months later. If you want to know, save the profile and check back — or put it on a watchlist so you are told when the status changes.

Can a VAC ban be removed?

Valve's stated position is that VAC bans are permanent and non-negotiable, and that support will not remove them. Treat any service claiming it can lift a VAC ban as a scam.

There is one thing that does change over time: the ban stops being counted as recent. The ban itself remains visible on the account permanently.

How to check an account

Paste any Steam profile link, SteamID64 or vanity name into the search on this site. You get the VAC and game ban status, how many bans there are, how long ago the last one was, plus account age, Steam level and CS2 playtime.
